The autistic neurotype has its own way of processing sensory information, attending to the environment, developing and nurturing interests, and communicating. It makes perfect sense that it would also have a unique method for learning language!
I have completed the training , passed the test, and am proud to be an NLA trained clinician through meaningfulspeech.com.
The following description is from the Meaningful Speech website. You can learn more by clicking the link to their website below:
Gestalt language processors (GLP) are "whole to part" thinkers and acquire language in chunks. These chunks of language, sometimes called "echolalia", "scripts" or "gestalts", are a vital component of gestalt language development. With the right language environment and support, these gestalts will become more flexible over time. The child will be able to mix and match portions of the gestalts (mitigating) and later free single words from these gestalts. These single words will allow the child to generate original, self-generated language. We need to embrace the child's echolalia (gestalts) in order to support the child through the Stages of Natural Language Acquisition (NLA).
In true AuDHD fashion, I am a voracious consumer of information on my favorite topics. These are some of my favorite courses:
An incredible 14 hour live training by Kieran Rose (The Autistic Advocate).
A comprehensive training by Racheal Dorsey, the autistic SLP.
A really great training by the co-creators of Autism Level Up, Amy C. Laurent, PhD and Jacquelyn Fede, PhD
A fantastic training by Kelly Mahler, OTD, OTR/L
A treasure trove of classes offered by SLP and sex educator Laura Wolford, PhD, MS CCC-SLP
A live training presented by the incomprable Meg Proctor, MS OTR/L
A 32-hour course by PESI which, upon completion and the passing of all relevant tests, allows me to add seven more letters to my signature line. The letters stand for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Certified Rehabilitation Services Provider. I dislike this, because I'm not rehabbing anyone. I support people in figuring out how to work with, not against or in-spite-of, their neurodivergent brains.
I am LOVING the Neurodiversity Summit that Learn, Play, Thrive is presenting right now. I've learned a lot, put a million books into my 'to read' pile, and excitedly shared resources with my husband when I find have those 'it me' moments.
Amanda Diekman is a late dx'd autistic parent of kids with PDA (pervasive drive for autonomy) profiles. She runs a site and hosts this summit where she interviews people who study, have lived experience as, or are parenting PDAers.
Learning:
Identify the source of anxiety
Promote integration and resolution. Incorporate teachings from neuroscience, psychology, quantum physics, and contemplative practices
Integrative approach to building the capacity to integrate energy and information.
